Hey everyone!

This is my first time posting, and I'm relatively new to the aquarium-fish club, so pardon the ignorant nature of the question. One of my female rosy-barbs has just become pregnant, and I expect a batch of eggs within the next 36 hours; the only problem is that my only male rosy-barb died a few days ago. I believe they are external fertilizers, so really I guess I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to get this batch of eggs to hatch? It would be my first batch, and I'm excited, however, with no male barbs in the tank, I realize that chances of fertilization and hatching are slim-to-none. If I went out and purchased a mature male rosy-barb tomorrow, would he be ready to fertilize the eggs? Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance! Cheers,

KenGee

You are quite correct that you need a male for the eggs to be fertilized; during the mating process the female lays the eggs and the male follows behind releasing sperm.

Any mature male rosy barb would be able to fertilise the eggs. You will need a way of keeping the parents from eating the egss, plus a supply of very tiny food for the fry once they become free swimming.

Best of luck, and welcome to the forum :)
