I just had to share my excitement. I checked in on my newest Platies, my high-fins, and noticed they all had gravid spots! As I've had these fish for 3 weeks, with no males in the tank, so I figure they must be pretty close to giving birth. I already had my fry tanks set-up and ready, for another few fish I have (Angels) but they ate the eggs so I figured I can use them for the Platy beebees.
I can't wait though, I've never had High-fin babies before.
I know this is a kind of pointless post....but I'm just excited, because I never noticed the gravid spots before (Orange fish)!
Thanks. Wooo...party for the Platies! They are probably not so thrilled, because they have to give birth to the little guys....but I'm excited. It will be so cute to see their high-fin develop!!
I got as exsited as you are now when my platys were first pregnant, i called the first baby lucky, since then i have had about 50 babies (more were born but obviously got eaten) all were born and bred in a community tank. Platies breed like flys (well mine do) you will have loads more to come.
When i clean my tanks out i pour the old water into a pre-rinsed bath with a plug in (the fish plug so no traces of soap),it then takes me about half an hour to search the bath for babies with a torch and then put them back in the tank.
I hope your platies do well and hope you find good homes for them as i am trying to.
Good Luck and congrats
Don't worry Tess, I know all about Platies and their breeding-ness. I've had them for a loooong time. These girls have been in an all female tank at the LFS for quite some time, so I was surpised they were even pregnant. I guess they really stored that sperm! My LFS is willing to take any of the ones I don't want to keep, and sell them, because they don't usually have high-fins in. I also get paid for giving them to them, so that will help feed the fry!
Lol... gotten any yet, Ana?
I haven't that molly is keeping me on my toes.
She keeps starting to poop, and I go, "OMG IT'S DA BABIES!"
But then... no babies come.
BUT- They shall soon. *stalks little pregnant fishy*
Nope, no babies. I've been away for about 4 days, so I rushed back into my room to check on them...and they come and look for food. One is VERY big though...and her gravid spot is getting bigger. I'm thinking another week or so, for her, maybe longer for the others.
And don't stalk your fishie! You'll stress her out, and then she won't have her babies as soon.
Don't watch her. It won't make her have her babies any sooner. And she'll probably have them at night, or early morning. Most of them tend to give birth then, and then you wake up one morning and see babies!
I remember my first batch. Came from a guppy name Leopard. I woke up in the morning, climed out of bed, peered in and... I saw like 12 fr. I was so excited and screamed down the stairs, "LEOPARD HAD HER BABIES!" My parents came dashing up with their coffee mugs and peered curiously. They helped me spot them too.
I know it won't help. But. I /have/ to watch. I've caught one giving birth before, and I'm really curious and I want to see it again. Probably won't. But little fat girl fascinates meh.
