I want to know if my bristlenose catfish is pregnant or if she is having some internal problems?!?!

I went to the fish shop and they told me that the male finds a spot for the female to lay eggs and then guards it and rases the children. My male catfish (Bruce) is a lasy s*hit … all he does is sit behind the rock all day and come out at night I spose, never seen him be very active during the day.

Anyway back to the problem … the female catfish has expanded in size and I don’t know if it’s an internal or what ever problem, on this photo u can see that the dot on the belly has gone a little red, is this normal during pregnancy??

Could you guys help me out by listing all the possible symptoms for me to diagnose if she is expecting babies or not. I believe she’s had babied before a while back!

Thanks for your help

Btw I’ve separated them into a smaller aquarium with no fish and lots of rocks for ultimate hiding, so the father gets his s*it together and starts mating properly.

Sorry to hear about your Plec SQRL. Please don't lose faith in the forum, it's just that there wasn't time for someone who could give you the answer to see your post, or maybe no-one knew.

If you have any more problems, please post them on here (tropical fish emergencies would be best) and I'm sure you'll find help. Sorry again. :(

Dear SQRL:

Super sorry about your Brisltenose, I lost mine too last night. Sounded like you had an internal parasite to make her belly red though. The **** idiot at my LFS said mine was probably consitpated. The little geek didn't even know that Ottos are used to clean algae.
Sorry again,
Elizabeth :-( :rip:

Mod's note: Please do not try to bypass out swear filter. Thanks

SQRL - Really sorry i didn't see your post... normally the females just plump up.

I'd say they were definatly problems (but then you know that now :( )

Where abouts are you? Your more than welcome to a couple of bristle fry (about 15mm at the moment) ;)

hehehe i am in Adeliade - Australia a little too far from UK but thanks anyway.

While her illness she moved her tail from side to side and would never stop ... i think the infection made her uncomfortable ... i have another question ..

Is there any way of the infection passing through the water to the male bristlenose? And shuould i let the male bristlenose go back into the main fishtank with the other smaller plecs?

* The main fishtank has whitespot at the moment and is under treatment
