Hi guys! I got a 25 litre tank for crimbo and currently have only 4 glowlight tetra (lfs would only sell me 5 and 1 died within a couple of days) I am obviously planning on getting some more fish, but think 1 of the tetras may be pregnant, and didn't want to stress her out too much. I bought a v trap to put her in, but left the lid off as she didn't appear to like the rocking caused by taking it off every time I fed her, but after a week or 2 in there she has jumped out of the trap into the tank with the others. How long is the gestation period for tetras? is it safe to leave her in the tank? I am loathe to put her back in the v trap as she obviously didn't like it or she wouldn't have escaped, but want to do what would be best for any possible babies, any suggestions? And when can I start to introduce more fish?

Glowlights do not get pregnant they just drop their eggs in the plants and gravel i would not put her in a trap they just stress the fish out.Is your fish very bloated as it might be sick with dropsy.

yes she is bloated, how do I tell if she has dropsy? & if she does how do I treat it? is it infectious? I don't want the others to get ill aswell

To be honest there isn't much you can do with that size tank with fish as it only a 5 gal, just a few more tetra's to make a bigger shoal, though that tank isn't really big enough for shoaling fish.
What do you feed the fish, and what does it look like when the fish goes to the toilet.
Also can we take a look at your water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
Bacterial infections, look for signs of the fish being unable to maintain it's position in the water, laying on the gravel or plants, dropsy scales stick out.

Feed them flakes, not sure what you mean when you ask what it looks like when they go toilet, what should I be looking for in particular? Don't know what the stats are, but can take water to the shop tomorrow and find out, had it tested before putting the fish in & they told me it was fine. Fish swims fine, seems to be happy now out of v trap, swims straight and having no trouble that i can see, just bloated, no scales sticking out anywhere, and not appearing to rest against gravel or plants.
Are you suggesting that I shouldn't have put shoaling fish in there? cos the shop said that I should put them in first to help establish the tank, and were quite reluctant to sell me anything else first.
I'm confused and want to look after them properly but feel really naive, there's so much to learn!
