Pre Set Heaters

Has anyone here used these pre set heaters, I've had three of them in different tanks but have gone back to conventional ones, the pre set ones seem ok at first but then they seem not to keep a constant temperature and they seem to run cool, I was wondering if the built in thermostat gets clogged with "tank stuff" algea or whatever, they are just something I would not recommend.

do you place it at an angle? vertical placement can lead to inaccurate results due to heated water rising

Never used that type of heater. All ours are adjustables so that I have control of the tank temperature.

Too many experiences where thermostat on heaters aren't calibrated to the indicated temp for me to trust a pre set one where I can't adjust it to get the temp I want

Yes I always place any heater at an angle because of what you rightly say, I just don't trust them any more.
