What exactly is a powerhead for?

I'm reading about nano reefs. They seem to be pretty interesting. Except I can't seem to figure out what the powerheads are for.. LOL.

Predominatly for water circulation.

Its a pump, plain and simple with nanos the live rock is used to filter the water so in order to filter it need to flow around the tank somewhere about 20 to 30 times an hour

BUT (theres all ways a but) what your looking for is flow not a jet of water hence the better power heads move alot of water without blowing every thing around the tank
