I have returned a few powerheads cause I can't get any of them to work for more than a few minutes. Could the substrate be messing them up?

Hi, What substrate do you have?
How close to the substrate are you putting the powerhead?

It is just a black substrate for plants that I bought from the petstore. The power head is about 8-9 inches above the substrate

What size tank are you adding the powerhead to?
What make and rating (litres per hour) are the powerheads you have tried?

I have tried everything from the ones that say they are made for the tank to much larger ones that are made for tanks that are 70-80 gallons

If you are losing power heads, chances are that something rough is getting into the power head. To prevent that I run all of my power heads as power units for sponge filters. The sponges prevent anything rough reaching the impeller or its magnetic drive. Some of the plant substrates are very sharp and rough particles and could quickly destroy an unprotected power head. Small sponge covers are also made for power heads to protect them, although I always take advantage of the forced flow to run filters.
