The power here went out, and has been out for a few hours. The tank got down to 66-68. So far nothing has happened except for a new appreciation for generators. The tank temp is about 74 right now. (I have two heaters in a twelve gallon and they still struggle to keep it warm enough. I guess I need to get a wood stove :/ )
Anyways just thought I would share.

Oh yeah, could you just use a computer UPS to run a tank or would the battery run down too fast?

I think computer UPS's are only good for about 15 mins anyways aren't they? I guess there are more expensive kinds and I haven't looked in a while but the idea of pc UPS's aren't to run the pc, it's to keep it going until you can save all your documents and shut down. At least they used to be like that.

Yea, I was in the big blackout over the summer and was up every night stirring the water and every 6 hours or so was doing 25% wc's.

Glad it's working out for you and thanks for sharing. :)

I could just picture someone with a big spoon stirring an aquarium singing some witchs enchantment. Of course the fish would be looking at you like your nuts.

Did you lose any? I remember they interviewed someone who owned an aquarium shop during the blackout or hurricane (in the U.S.) and they lost pretty much ALL their fish. It seemed to me that maybe they were just planning on collecting the insurance because they did not seem to do anything to make sure the fish would make it. If they had bought a generator they would have saved money in the long run (unless they had insurance).

I have a pc back up box that runs for about 2 hours. I had to use it once during a bad storm, I had extension cords running from all over the house to it and it did a great job

I had no dealings with the blackout directly (and I hope I never do) but during that blackout this past summer I had 3 fish being mailed from Detroit and they were stuck in a dark warehouse for 4 days, trapped in bags and in the heat. They all arrived safely  , it's amazing how tough some fish can be
