my mom told me a horror story on how she lost her entire, beautiful freshwater tank when our area was hit with an ice storm and we lost power for close to a week. Of course, the filters and heaters stopped working and the fish died. Do any companies make battery powered heaters? This would be a good emergency item to keep around, since the hellhole I live in seems to get these ice storms every few years. We seem to lose power at least once a year around here.

Get a generator. It will more than pay for itself if it keeps the pipes in the house from freezing.

Also, I heard a tip that if you wrap towels around the tank and put in a battery powered aerator, this can help. Will it?

I spent just under $400 for a 5KW 6 years ago. My house has 100 amp service, it puts out 33 amps, enough to take care of the furnace blower, a couple of refrigerators, sump pump, lights, and aquatics setup. You can get a small one for a couple of hundred to take care of tanks & a few other things.

Hmm, thats a really good idea. I'll talk to my parents.

When our power went out I tried wrapping blankets around the tank to keep the water warm, but it didn't work. I lost all my fish. I would like to get a generator now that I have fish again.
