Hi everyone,
I`m new to fishkeeping and am currently in the stage of slowly introducing fish to our new tropical tank. Previously it`s had four zebra danio and yesterday we introduced one black molly. At the shop, the fish looked fine and it looked fine when we put it in the tank. However, within about 30 minutes of it going in the tank, it started to pass what looked like white, stringy poo that would hang on and then eventually fall off.
Some sites seem to suggest this is a parasite. Others, including a fish veterinary site, suggest it is just the mucus which normally coats their poo but which is showing as white because they haven`t eaten enough.
I've uploaded a quick video of it to YouTube, which I've attached to this post. Any suggestions? The molly is swimming around normally (at least I judge it normal, given I've had it for a day) and seems willing to eat.
The production of the white string seems constant. It occasionally falls off (I fished one out with a net and it split in half so I assumed it was mucus rather than a parasite...) but it seems to be constantly pooing one. If it doesn't have one hanging on then it will 20 minutes later. I don't know how it can produce so much if it is just mucus/poo, but equally it can't have that many parasites in it if it is that?
Grateful for any views. I don't want to remove it from the tank unnecessarily if that would cause harm but I also don't want anything to infect the health danios.
Thanks!
