I got 6 zebra danios at Petsmart 2 days ago (don't judge, I wanted something cheap as this is a new tank and I know new tanks are prone to fish deaths), and one of them is showing signs of some kind of illness on his lower jaw. It doesn't look furry, it looks like there's a piece of white flake food hanging off his mouth, but my flake food is red, green, brown, etc. And there's a small red streak going down the middle of his lower jaw. Here's pictures.

What is this?

I just noticed two little string-like things hanging down from the mouth also. Parasite?

How many gallons is the tank please?
How many fish and which type?
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph?

Do the strings have a Y type tail end?
Do the strings look like cotton strands.?
Red streaking is septicemia.

It's a 20 gallong long aquarium. Only 6 zebra danios and a black mystery snail. Ammonia really close to 0ppm, nitrIte is close to 0ppm, nitrate is around 40ppm (it was closer to 100 two days ago, but I've been changing around 10 gallons a day). The fish in question is now swimming only at the top of the aquarium, and he doesn't seem able to close his mouth. There's also some red streaking on his sides now, which looks almost like stretch marks or claw marks. What is this?

Septicemia hard to cure once is progresses. Anti internal bacteria med by interpet.
You will have to remove the snail from your tank.

Septicemia
stethoscope.jpg

Symptoms:

Fish may have reddening at fin bases, blood streaks throughout the fins and body, small hemorrhages around the eyes. Dull listless behavior and lack of appetite may also be present.

microscope.jpg

Cause:

Systemic bacterial infection caused by various bacteria, including Aeromonas, Pseudomonas andVibrio. The illness is often brought on by poor water quality or as a result of parasitic infestations or other infections. These bacteria enter the blood stream and circulate through the tissues causing inflammation and damage. Inflamed blood vessels in the skin and at fin bases stand out. Blood vessel and heart tissue damage cause hemorrhaging and consequently leakage of body fluids into the abdomen, which may lead to Dropsy.

Treatment:

Water conditions must be improved for all fish in the tank, regardless of how many fish are infected. Check your waters Treat with Kanacyn or Tetracycline as well as with a medicated food if the fish will eat. If parasites are suspected, all the fish in the tank should be treated with antiparasitic medication. Using salt to help restore osmotic balance might be helpful.

Thank you! The fish already died, but now I know if it happens again. :)

New question. Now a different fish has it, but it's effected the lower part of his/her body. Everything past the dorsal fin pretty much he/she can't move. Just kind of floating around. That area also has faded color. More of a yellowy-white than the bluey-silver of the rest of the body. What could this be? I don't see any red spots on this one.
