I was doing a routine water change this morning and I noticed that my 3 year old Pajama cat has some weird spots on his side, right in the middle of his body. It is one large patch on each side, much to large to be ich. It looks like the skin on a snake when it is beggining to molt. I dont know how long he has actually had this going on, since I worked a lot of hours this week and havent seen too much of him since he likes to hide out under his rock. Could it be a fungus problem? In the 3 years that I have been keeping fish, I have never had a problem with ich or any other parasite like that, so I dont have much experience in that area. All the water levels are fine, right where they should be, and I havent added any new fish. It is a 30 gal tank, and he shares it with a small pleco, and a 1 male and 1 female African Cichild. The water temp. stays about 80-82 F. Does anybody have an idea on what this could be?

I would bet money that he probably got in a little fight with one of the other fish. My syno cat routinely comes up with some sort of scratch or white mark that goes away in a day or two. I know how your feel though, because even though its a pretty usual thing in my tank, i still gasp every time i see it. As long as it doesn't look to be bothering the fish or look like it is becoming infected, i wouldn't worry. I have never had a disease or problem with my fish for about 2 yrs also. So I am to the point where if a spot shows up on a fish, i wait it out a few days before panicing. Just keep a close eye on it.
