hi disaster has struck i have small sprouts of aiptasia and dont know what to do. Also last night when watching with my red flashlight i found to my horror something that looked like a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE aip. It was white and it had pink tips but the strange thing is is its not out in th daylight it seems nocturnal. ill try to get a pic of it for an id.

This hobby is startiung to get a real drag for how much its costing because so far i need more live rock, yet to stock my clean up crew by the looks of things i need some joes juices, my salt is just about run out and 100 other things. im really starting t oregret starting a marine as i just cant find the money. hopefully febuary wil bring me some good fortune

You're not in Kansas anymore Toto. Welcome to marine. The world of saltwater is a dog eat dog world. Stinging, biting, encrusting, overgrowing, poison, venom....living in the ocean is not easy and these creatures have adapted to it. Set up the same environment in your home and you're going to see the same thing.

It's not a cheap hobby.

Survival of the fittest.

Hang in there.

Hang in there, you'll get it :). Try starting with lemon juice ;)

MAYBE, but I've never seen an aiptasia that is nocturnal only... Chances are its a closely related coralimorph anemone. Whether its sting and reproductive capabilities match Aiptasia, you'll have to find out yourself unfortunately

hmm interesting and it is quite a kool thing so im going with the philosophy inocent until proven guilty. Also im gonna get a pepermint so if it is an aip then it should be munched up appropiately

How many rows of tentacles and/or are they concentric? Could be a corallimorph like Ski said, although I can't tell from the picture. My coralliorphs like to tuck into the substrate (or rock) during the day and pop out at night. If it's a corallimorph it's not necessarily a bad thing, but you won't want any really small fish in that tank if it stays in.

by how small is really small? because well i want a purple dartfish, 2 clowns a sixline and neon goby. wold those all be hunky dory or would they get stung? also ive moved my rock stack around and i cant see it anymore but i also found what looks like a dead hammer coral was all bleachded and scrawny though so no chance of survival

Well, corallimorphs did take out my 1" clown goby, and the goby was substantially larger than the corallimorphs. Wrasse and dartfish are probably fine based on the size of the ones I've seen, but I would make sure the neon goby was many times bigger than any UFOs in the tank, or hold off on it until you know for certain what you've got lurking in the rocks. Should you ultimately want to get rid of whatever it is, I'm sure whatever nukes pest nems will also nuke Corallimorphs. They are not as hardy as Aiptasia.

well i think im just gonna dig out that part of the rock and then leave the thing out to die. If i have things i dont want and want it gone quik then i stand by a hammer and chisel
