Pop Eye

One of my Cardinals has a bad case of pop eye. One eye is pretty badly swollen, the other seems ok. It has had it for a few weeks now. I have used 'Metafix antibacterial' but to no effect.

I have noticed that one or 2 others have slightly swollen eyes now. I thought that this was a non-contageous problem?...and I have no idea where it suddenly came from. Is this perhaps a common problem with Cardinals?....I have 15 in the tank (10 Gal). I also have 5 Harlquins & 5 Marble Hatchets but they seem to be ok.

Has anybody any thoughts on a remedy please? I do not have another tank in which to isolate them.

melafix will cute popeye;
however popeye is a symptom of many disease not a disease itself.
it is often, but not always, caused by poor water quality

what are your water params?
if we can rule out bad water then we can start to find other causes
and help prevent it from effecting any other fish

Water params....well to tell the truth I have always just changed the water weekly...about 20% or so and changed/cleaned the filter parts as necessary.
Filters:
1 rough/1 smooth. cleaned/replaced 3/4 monthly
1 carbon. Replaced monthly
1 poly pad. replaced weekly

I do not 'test' the water but the tank has been 'up-and-running' for about 20 months now and I have never had a problem with just changing the water weekly from the tap and adding hot to it to bring it up to temp.

Do you think this needs a 'method-change'?

I've been to my local 'fish-store'. They do a free water test and mine is fine. I have some anti internal bacteria stuff with which to treat them over the next week or so.....hopefully this will help!

provided the water that you add on a change is not +/- 4C than your tank water there should be no need to add 'hot' water.
I've adapted my shower so I can use a hose and get the temp almost perfect; other people have lots of buckets lying around the house untill they are at room temp before adding to a tank.

what anti-bacterial thing did you get?
just one more thing; when you say you clean the filter sponges, exatly how do you clean them, or more specificaly do you use tank water to clean them?

I boil the kettle and add hot water to the cold water from the tap to bring it up to temp. I use a small plastic bucket and syphon the water into the tank over the filter system.

The bacterial stuff I got is made by Interpet and is the number 9 - 'Anti Internal Bacteria'. One of the particular things it is for is the 'popeye', which a couple of my fish have. Dose 1 today, dose 2 after 4 days and return the carbon filter after a further 7 days. Then do a 30% water change.

Hopefully some improvement will follow!

I have my own cure. Somehow, Gerard (my copper pk betta) got it once, and I was able to cure it (I do the weekly water changes, he's in a 1 gallon, so I don't understand).

I changed the water right when I saw it. I added a tiny bit of stress coat, and the more then recromended dose of Doc Wellfish Aquarium Salt (about 3/4 tsp). I added the aquarium salt for three days (same ammount), then did another water change. Added the same amound of aquarium salt, and a good amout of stress coat, and within a matter of days, he was fine.

im not sure if its what you do but you should only clean your filter sponges in tank water ie: use the water youve obtained during a gravel vac & water change to rinse out your sponges.
apologies if this is what you meant & im just being thick!!!!!!
