Poo in filter

o well, looks like my filter is rubbiash then

and i cant afford another.........Ill have to give them to someone in my mums work, i checked ammonia today (only did water change yesterday 25%) and it was around 2-3ppm!! (im cycling with fish...sorry "was") so looks like my filter....isnt really filtering, lol so i guess my fish will have to say "bye" coz i cant afford another filter and its better than them dieing.

"sniFF" :(

Might be nothing wrong with your filter

I cleaned mine tonight it was yucky.

Hi toggle :)

Even the best filter will only do so much. Most of the waste that fish produce will settle to the bottom where you can vacuum it out.

As far as the ammonia reading, it will depend on the amount of fish in the tank and how often you do water changes. Why not tell me a little more about your tank and perhaps I or the other members can help you?

BTW, it's not unusual for people to worry a lot at the start, but most problems can be overcome with a little effort and a lot of patience. :D

the reason why i think it isnt working is coz my tank is sooooooooo murky plus u see object just fly past the intake vent rather than actually going IN the intake venmt -_-

I got 3 guppies in a 5 gallon tnak and i only did a water cahnge yeaterday and one earlier but still a readon off 3ppm amonia

I can see the fish dieing if they stay in there too long, it was boiught second hand

Im thinking of buying a 10 gallon tank BRAND NEW with a descent fully working filter..also its an excuse to get a bigger tnak for more fishies :shifty:

second hand tank huh?

I'm guessing that the filter is used too. Give it a thorough cleaning and change the media. You said that the poo just floats by the intake, so im guessing that its clogged. After you're finished cleaning it should work fine.

i bought new filter media for it (like a sponge stuff) I have already taken out and rinsed in the tank water even though i shouldnt coz i am cylcing atm

Hi toggle :)

Is your filter an AquaClear? If not, what brand is it?

Rinsing out them media in used tank water is good. Since the water is chlorine free it will not harm the beneficial bacteria you are trying to cultivate because these bacteria are not growing in the poo and gook on the filter, but are clinging to the surfaces. Clean it as often as necessary if it helps the water flow. :D

however if you're planning to put that new filter media in, you must leave the old filter media in the tnak at teh same time, or the beneficial bacteria will be lost.

how are your fish doing? do their gills look any better?

hiya, im in work on lunch atm,

and i just bought a new filter its an Aqua-Flow 2 and on the box says its good for 50-150 leters and a 500 l/h flow rate, so according to what it says its overkill :)

it comes with a weird long hose thingie and loads of different shape sockets, is this if i want the water flowing out to skim the surface to increase oxygen in the water?

Is poo meant to be sucked in by the filter?

Only if honey is in it!

Arent we supposed to clean out some of the gunk every once in a while anyway??? ;) They take bad stuff out of the water, the filter gets full/clogged, you just clean it :)
