ok i live in the cleveland area and if i can convine my parents i want to build a pond in my bakyard several hundred gallons but i was wondering if any pond experts know if ponds r expencive to build and make and mantain and if i would hav to take the fish inside during winter or if i heat the pond they would be ok outside

Hi,

Expense depends on how big and what type of pond you would like and if you are keen on DIY. Shop bought solid liner type ponds can be expensive and flexible liner ponds are more suited to gently sloping edges. In my opinion the most cost effective is to build your own block and cement pond. However this may not be suitable if you want the natural wildlife look. As for the fish in cold weather, provided you stick to hardy species they will be fine in unheated water. If there is a particularly cold snap and the water may freeze, place a ball in the water to ensure the fish can breath. It is uncommon for water deeper tahn about 12 inches to freeze in Britain.

Hi mate is it Cleveland UK or US.

It depends on what your after really as to how much it will cost. I built mine by cutting out a section of concrete patio and digging down a couple of feet, then I erected a timber frame upto about 4' and then it just cost for the liner and filter etc.

If you or your parents know any tanker drivers you could try and scrounge a new tanker liner which is basically a giant sheet of polythene, only downside to these is they dont last as long as proper liner. It is quite easy to make a filter box at not a great cost just using a cold water tank.

Ooh! Please explain this. Or is there a website that you recomend where there are instructions?

it also depends if you are getting which types of fish as koi are very expensive but I assure you they are worth every penny but its probably best to go with goldfish as they are very hardy I suppose you could start digging now as the soil is still moist and easy to dig through but its not best to get your fish yet as they will get too stressed when they acclimatise

no it wouldnt as they tank will crack in the winter cause of the coldness your better off buying a high quality pump such as blagdon and a high quality filter with a built in uv

Sorry, by cold water tank I don't mean a glass tank. What I have used is a black plastic 24gallon storage tank, the type that is used for a header tank in the loft.
They are very easy to use and setup and a UV unit can still be used just not built in.

Severina, I'm sorry I haven't got back to you sooner Ive been ill for a few days, I will sort out some photos or drawings etc and post them shortly.

Cheers Breedon, that lilly has got way to big now so it will be getting split up this year, so I will be selling some lillies in a couple of months hopefully.

Glass tanks are not reckonmended for out side because u probaly know that it will probaly freez in winter and if is glass it could shatter i suggest a plastic one i brought my plastic filter for a fiver and has not let me down yet. In sulate in winter any way if posible

i keep koi orfs and gold fish and minnows in there and i do not take them out as the water is deep enough for them to hibernate in winter

i built my pond for £10 and that was for the filter and pump

If you had read the post above yours you would see that I had already clarified that.
