will the sponge cells be the same size as canistor filters? or is mond media diffrent?

I have several sponges made for a pond filter and the sponges that came with my Rena XP series filters. I can say that the pore size on the pond filter is much coarser than on the Rena sponges. Both kinds provide plenty of surface for use as a bio-filter but the Rena does a better job of mechanical filtration.
