I have several different pond lilies in baskets within my pond, with one species being able to grow the largest lily pad. As temperatures are now getting lower, some of the leaves are starting to decay and holes are beginning to form. What should I do to prepare them for late-autumn and winter? Should I cut them right down to the crown?

Advice would be much appreciated as this is my first year with lily pads within the pond and I don't want to see them decay and cause an ammonia spike, but on the other hand, I don't want to prune them to the point that they can't photosynthesise and consequently die.

All I ever do is wait until the leaf pulls out from the crown by hand easily and remove the leaf stem from the pond.Leave the tuber in the water it will look after itself until next spring.
