Hi. i've just made a small pond in my garden using polythene plastic. I've put rocks, dirt and plants around it but now i find that when I water the plants, the dirt from behind the rocks is causing muddy water to dribble into the pond. I havnt got anything in the pond yet. I am wondering if anyone can tell me how to do it so it doesnt muck or polute the pond water when I water my plants.
thankyou for any help.
:D

you need to form a small ridge round the edge of the pond above the soil line but below the plastic, polythene isnt really suitable for a pond as over a given period of time it will rot,you can pick up a proper liner for peanuts if you shop around ,what size pond is it ?

it's about 1 1/2 foot diametre and about a foot deep. only small. I've got two small goldfish and a small lily plant in there. it seems to have packed out and stopped dribbling into the water now. I didn't know the plastic rotted. how long does it take cause I'll have to keep an eye on it I suppose. thanks for your advice. i'll try and do the ridge thing. I think the majority of the dirt dribbling into the pond might have just been from under the rocks around the top.

a foot and a half diameter and a foot deep ? thats not a pond its a puddle lol ,if you go on tank sizes for water amount its nowhere near suitable for keeping fish and a pond that size has a chance to freeze solid although you dont give your location, the plastic at best will last you 6months if i were you id double the depth and go for something around 4ft square,if you dont want to dig a large hole go for a semi raised one ,you can view my folder on the link below to get some idea although i am building a new one this year
its a shame your not local as i have a large pond suitable for koi for sale complete with pump and bio filter :hey:

I live in nz right next to the ocean so there's no chance of it freezing. will that cold but that's about it.
I know it's not big enough for goldies for too long. I've only got a couple of little wee ones in there and when they get too big i'll either put them in my big fish tank or swap them at lfs for more little ones.
I haven't made a big pond coz i'm only renting my house so it's not mine and don't want to do all that work just to leave it there. one day when I get my own house, i'm gonna make a huge concrete one with all the bits
I'd love to have a huge huge pond with koi or big goldfish, frogs and a couple of ducks. that's what I want  chickens, a dog, about 10 cats and a white picket fence  my man doesn't agree with my dream but i'll convince him :flex: yeah so i'm not gonna over crowd the "puddle" lol. I did a water change today after it being there for about a week and will do them whenever the water is murky. the fish and my tadpoles seem happy tho
