Hello,

I currently own a garden pond with a capacity to hold 1400 litres of water. It has been running for over 12 months in which it went through the cold winter months at which point temperatures went down to -5 degrees centigrade. The water feature was left on during the cold months so the thick ice didn't cover parts of the pond where the water was being agitated. Most importantly, after the cold months passed, the fish managed to survive.

This winter there will be two new species of fish in the pond which are: 3 golden orfe and 2 ghost carp (also a juvenile white ogon). I am concerned that they will not cope very well if temperatures were to go below zero. I have therefore been considering a reliable heater for the purpose of keeping the temperature above zero but not above 6-8 degrees C as I'd like them to go dormant as naturally as possible.

My questions are: Please can I take the name of a reliable pump manufacturer and/or pump model? Are they reliable at keeping temperatures at a particular level constantly? (I have read temperature shouldn't be changed more than 1 degree C per hour otherwise this will become a source of stress for the fish).

That is all,

Thank you.

i dont use a heater in either my koi pond or the goldie pond

the koi pond has never frozen over but the goldie pond does if i dont cover
so i place a tarpalin over it use some garden canes to keep it off the water and i place another tarp over the koi pond too

filter with its winter jacket on it has a cover for the lid (jacket and lid cover is tarp with 4 layers of bubble wrap sandwiched between the 2 layers of tarp)

a good friend of mine also don't use a heater in the pond, but just puts a cover over it and don't seem to have a problems... :good:
they have had their pond for over 5 years now, so i guess this method must work
