My friends pond that we built this summer has frozen over completely this morning, and the pump has stopped working as well. Water temp is down to 3 degrees C. He has turned the pump off to see if the pipe will thaw. Does the filter need to be turned on all through the winter, or will he get away with turning the filter off and just leaving the pump on to agitate the surface and stop an area from freezing?

  Don't worry, my mate didn't check the fuse on his plug. the fuse had blown and so the pump had stopped allowing the water to freeze over!!!

i dont think its such a good idea to let the pond freeze over completely. i would put a plastic ball in to keep some air being able to ventilate.
