Hi the mrs and i were looking at upgrading our filtration, as was wondering if there could be any problems with using a pond filter instead of the usual external filter.

I would imagine if the media has the same density of sponge and maybe ceramic then there wouldn't be a problem at all - except for the fact that it will probably be noisy as the manufacturers wouldn't need to keep them too quite for the outdoors.

i carnt see why not.

when i was thinking about a bigger tank i was thinking about using one.

however you will need a pump inside the tank (if your looks at a pressurised one)

also they dont really filter what the say. i wont say they can only cope with about half what the manufacturers say imo

wouldnt a sump be a cheaper but just as effective solution? you could surface skim this way using a wier and some floss, then have the water sent to the sump via over flow, then through some media etc. then pump it back up to the tank.

There is no reason why a pond filter would fail to work. Most being gravity fed returns however, will require the outlet to be at or above the water level of the tank. They are not pretty to look at, so would likely want enclosing in something to disguise it, but it would work :good:

This said I agree with truck. If you are going Pond filter for more filtration, in an aquarium, you'd likely be better off with a sump. More water volume, more media options and can be set-up to run quieter :good: Oh, and you don't have to stare at a giant black/dark green box above the tank also, or fassion some form of enclosure

All the best
