Hi,

Can tropical freshwater fish be kept in a pond that is only 30-40cm deep at its deepest point? The pond is approx 2metres by 1.3meters and has a bowl shaped bottom. Will 30-40cm of depth be adequate enough to keep any tropical fish?

thanks

no idea where you live in the world...europe no...anywhere else youd have to give temp of water.

outdoor or indoor pond? and whats already in it?

I live in Australia. Currently there is nothing in the pond, there is no heater, no filter and it is outside.

really you need to take water temps every hour trhrough a day and get the average

I keep fish. I realise that I'm going to need a heater through out the winter months. That is however an entirely different issue. Before I even bother looking into heaters and filters I need to find out if the outdoor pond is deep enough to hold any tropical species. If it isn't, then the temperature of the water is irrelevant because I can't hold any fish.

Edit: I understand that the temperature has an impact on how deep the water needs to be, but I'll be picking up a heater anyway. So for this topics sake, imagine a constant temp of 25C. IS 30-40cm still deep enough?

Should be just about fine but it is borderline so if you can easily make it a bit deeper it would be a lot better

for small species its fine, guppy size maybe a bit bigger...you will want top dwelling fish or fish like mountain minnows.

you couldnt i dont think keep fish like neons in it as temp change would probably be too drastic.

personally small shoals of fish would be ok but nothing too big.

of course you would need to consider predators too...frogs, snakes, birds.
