Are we talking about the filter wool?
If so, the only use I found for filter wool was in my sump. I cut and draped some over the last bubble trap baffle. It did an excellent job of stopping any microbubbles from progressing any further through the sump and back into the display tank. The main reason though, was that the next compartment contained my refugium with DSB. I did this to stop as much food and waste particles as possible from getting caught on the algae and from being deposited into the sandbed there - which meant little, if any maintenance. In fact, I don't remember ever having to vaccum my sump DSB.
The filter wool also also calmed the flow of water entering that section, as it wicked through the wool, rather than splashing into the chamber. This meant the sand wasn't distrubed or the anaerobic bacteria as a result.
The amphipods would clamber all over the filter wool to feed off it. When it got manky looking, I'd simply remove it and replace it with some fresh wool. I wasn't particularly concerned with the wool becoming a nitrate factory, as the DSB and refugium was the next compartment. My nitrates never went above 0 after the introduction of the DSB and cheatomorpha.
