I own piranhas, anyone else? Also Why/why not?

i have 4 red bellies as you know and i find them fascinating fish :good: and very pretty in thier own way
are you a member of a piranha forum?i tried one but it was crap.do you know a good one?pm me

I kept six fair sized red bellies for several months whilst their owner was having a house built.
Not a fish I would choose for myself.
They were quite pretty but boring and I was glad to see the back of them.
I much prefer the characters of cichlids and catfish.

Nope, dont know of any piranha forums. The only forums I belong to is this one, and like it quite a bit. I dont have first hand experience with piranha forums, but from what I have seen they really are just plain bad. (I am saying MOST of these forums not all) They dont know anything about aquaria aspects such as cycling, plants, or anything this forum provides. And they feed their pianhas anything, live pinkeys  , meatballs, steak, and everything else not reccomended for a piranha diet.

They were quite pretty but boring and I was glad to see the back of them.
:p

No, I like watching them in public aquaria (my 5-year-old totally fell in love!), but they don't really fit in with the sort of fishkeeping I want to do myself, more of a small-fish person really.

I havent kept any pirahna species yet but i really like some of the Serrasalmus species, especially the elongatus. I was very close to getting one recently as i had a empty 75g but i stupidly bought a rare pair of catfish which have turned out to be so nocturnal that i cant even view them with the room lights off and a red LED torch  But i will have one eventually when i get more tanks or something dies.

To be honest...ever since I joined this forum, I've always admired some of the fish that CFC has kept and documented. Eg, I was always curious about keeping a predator tank, particulary a red tailed barracuda or piranha. My preference would be to try and feed frozen and avoid the 'live' as I am not into the 'fury' feeding mentality.

As posted above by dwarfgourami, I think that a predator tank does not fit in with my home and lifestyle right now, but, I am happy that AMS has started some piranha threads and has taken a humane approach to it. I plan to read most, if not all, the threads on this to keep a balanced position on fishkeeping. Afterall, piranhas are Characidae.

Thanks for the kind words steelhealr.

Like you said I also dont like the feeding frenzy of live foods. I do use livefoods such as earthworms, and other non-fish live foods. I feel horrible when I see someone dropping a poor goldy in a tank full of piranhas. But piranhas dont need live foods, all species readily take frozen foods and many will even eat pellets.

EDIT: by the way, I am also quite impressed by CFC's fish!

Thanks for the kind words about my fish

Just to clarify i do not use live feeders for any of my fish and no way promote their use unless there really is no other alternative and the fish will starve if it doesnt eat.

there is one other person i know on here keeps 6 reds with a lobster :hey: he said they get on fine too.i cant remember his name tho

I don't have any and never have.. I don't like the whole psycho fish eater deal they have. Not to say I don't think they are neat fish, because I do think they're interesting... They're just not for me.. I'll stick to silver dollars :D

Psycho fish eater? all fish eat other fish.. what do you think your pot of fish flakes is made of..
