im trying to find a pleco thats a bit different from the norm to live in my 6.5/2/2 tank im currently planning. the pleco will need to be of s decent size as the tank is looking like a large cichlid tank. ive just seen these polkadot lyretails at an lfs that were about 2 inches. after reading on planet catfish it says they get very big which is what im after but are they going to be too big?
im really after people that have kept or know people that have kept these fish please to confirm that they get to such a huge size.

I've not kept one but I have seen two in two different shops that were both over 2 foot. Tons of other plecs you could get in that tank plus the Adonis plecs dull down with the spots over the years as well the spots stay really small and well spread out rather than plecs like the Sunny plec L14 that get spots all over as they grow. Basically the spots the adonis has now is what it will have for life I think.

How about a ripsaw cat or a perruno catfish both get pretty big but it does take a lot of time. I know a shop that has one of each at the moment roughly 16" each. They are in Birmingham if your interested.

i dont think either sound suitable to be honest... ive already got the catfish (sun cats) and im now thinking of a large pleco

What is your budget for a plec?
i never budget myself, it really depends on the fish to be honest. i would happily pay £60-70+ for a decent plec. i dont like paying lots of cash for really small fish like zebras. as im possibly going to be growing the cichlids up umless i can find good examples elsewhere i guess a smaller juvi plec isnt the end of the world as it can grow up with the others.

I'm going to a shop tomorrow who have all types of large fish, cats and plecs, I'll let you know if there is anything that may suit you!

Yes mate they really can get that big, about 3 foot+. Ive seen a couple around 2.5 foot... absolutely stunning but really only suitable for big heated ponds. What they will neglect to tell you is there also very aggression and Territorial, i personally wouldn't keep them with other fish, been known to literally tare the flesh of other plecs and commons been one of them.

Jacko has given a couple of options which would probably suit quite well, get good sizes if the correct one is brought and both have stunning variants :)

What about L25 Scarlet Pleco?

if you see one tell me!!!

seriously they are hard to find now I suspect and cost a fair few quid as well

great fish I had one till something in my tank mauled it last year!

Apparently tri-mar stock the scarlet, you'd have to phone to find out if they currently have any though

Mat how big do you want it full grown?.... A really nice addition would be an L114 very similar to L25 but stays considerably smaller and very easy to obtain and at very good prices.

L25 has the potential to become a very large fish so it may actually be much bigger than you really want. Where as the 114 really should max out at around 12-14 inches ish.

Hi Jake,

fully grown i would want it about the 12 inch mark or as big as possible really in the tank size. i know there are many great looking plecs out there but its finding 1 you like then finding it for sale....
ill check the 114 out, thanks for the tip :good:

leopard acanthicus L114 are available at sweetknowle there £65 delivered for 1 7-9cm quite expensive have you looked at L075 para pleco/peckolitia sabaji there nice looking but only around 11" or if you want something even larger around 15" the L330 panaque is nice or pseudacanthicus sp L024 red fin cactus pleco there about 12" quite expensive but worth it
