ok i have a polka dot loach or whatever name you want to call it, i was wondering can u mix different colours/patterns of these loach ie another botia species? or would i have to get all polka dot loaches?

It's always best to get the same variety if you can or a similar looking loach but most loaches will shoal with any other loach, i have clowns, zebras and chain loach which will shoal together i also have khuli loach in the same tank but they tend to keep to themselves.

actually, not all loaches are social. you'd be better served to ask this question in "Cyprinids, Characins and Atherinids", loaches being Cyprinids and not Catfish

Loaches to avoid are tiger loaches which are best kept alone and skunk loaches which can be really nippy. Always remember their potential size and make sure you have room for extra fish. www.loaches.com is a good place for information.

I have many species of loach together in the same tank.
I have had no problems whatso ever with them; they play sleep and
act as a big loachy family, even the Tigers are no problem.

I do aggree that skunks are the ones to avoid

here is what I have together in my 72 gal tank
6x Botia almorhae, 2x Botia modesta 1x Botia hymenophysa,
4x Botia Angelicus, 4x Botia macracanthus,
5x Botia striata, 2x Botia rostrata, 3x Botia helodes & 2x Schistura mahnerti

thanks for the info people! :)
