Didn't know where else to put this.

I'm looking to contact a local member who has offered filter media but the thread suggests sending them a PM. Unless I'm being particularly dense (entirely possible), I can't see a PM option in anyone's profile. Am I meant to use the comments or am I missing something?

clicking on a profile name, it should be an option underneath where the profile picture should be. however, you may not be able to as youre a new member. im not too sure on the rules. but thats where teh option should be anyway.

i think its beceause your new and you have to have posted so many posts............bit of a rubbish rule really.
you could either post a load of posts, comment on the post or il pm the person for you if you like.......might just be easier to comment on there post :good:

bit of a rubbish rule really.
it exists to stop spammers coming straight into the forum and contacting members directly.
Since one of the first things that I would expect a new member with an uncycled filter emergency to do is contact their local media donor, would it make sense to reduce the minimum post number to somewhere in the 1-5 region? After all, a spammer can make 10 posts in a row just as easily as 1-5 posts.

KK, I'm not familiar with the history of setting it at 10, but I don't think that number is actually advertised anywhere on the site (although I could well be wrong). This means anyone trying to spam is likely to not bother after posting a few times and still not having access (as they have no idea how many are neded) - so 1-5 might be too little and 10 may be enough of a deterant.

It's also unlikely that they will take the time to engage with the forum (to ask the OPs question) as most spammers simply don't have the time and need to post their material as quickly as possible.

That was my point but rules are rules

yes, we do have rules here at TFF, but they are all pretty much open to discussion and change if appropriate.

Do members get notifications of new comments?

Any way I can get a nice Mod to add my to the PM group rather than going off & posting some drivel somewhere? ;)

you can set any topic to notify you of new activity - just use the 'watch topic' icon and select the desired settings.

You are only 2 posts away from activating PMs anyway (and it's not something we can easily activate - would require fiddling with the access settings)

post two replies in my journal (in my signature) - I wont mind :)
Thanks but I'm there now. I posted a request for media as the guy offering in my area isn't very active these days anyway.

Is spam by PM really that much of a problem? I've moderated a very busy AV forum previously & although the amount of spam posted is undoubtedly a big problem, can't say that I ever saw much by PM.
