In my point view, 65 % of what u read a bout SW product is a big advertisement. Think about it, u has RO, million equipments for filtrations 100 test kit, 100 reef care things.
Can't u see that every company introduces its product, by saying; u needs that thing in order to do this ….. It's all marketing.
ARE they scientists??? Don’t think so

depends if its in a article, a book by a top 10 author or on a forum.

i would say that i would belive it if it was in a top 10 book
articles and forums (not this forum ;) ) on the other hand i would have to double check ;)

the guys and gals on this forum know A LOT, i been round a few of the other forums and most of the guys there dont know that fish live in water :/

but you guys (and gals) rock the reefs socks! so i decided to settle here :D

I guess it depends where the advice comes from

Remember that althought business's are in the buisness of making money, they cant simply make ludicrious claim's regarding the potential of the product they are pushing

Also remember that the fact we frequent this board & others is to gleem & share knowledge/problems etc with each other, where your LFS may tell you that a product will do away with the need for water changes etc., the vets, experts etc. on this board will be hones and try to help out with answers gained from years of experience

There are a few people on this board I would trust implicitly with my reef as there are on other forums and I would like to think there are reefers out there who I have helped, but you cant simply say that you simply dont beleive most of the info you read becasue it doesnt suit your thinking

:)

Your poll question is also way to broad to answer

I personally would never take any information as gospel until I had at least tried to double check it using the internet, friends, fellow aquarists, LFS staff, etc.

Well opinions are like *&%holes, everyone has one.

So if you are saying do I believe everyone's opinions then no, but I believe what works for some doesn't work for all. Now facts are another story. If I buy a pump and it says it pumps Xgph then yes I believe that. If I read a book explaining the nitrogen cycle and it gives chemical formulas for the creation of nitrite, yes I believe that. There are some "gospel" truths to this hobby and then their are the theories which still need to be fully explored. You need to develope the experience to distinguish between the two. The easiest way to do this is to listen to those that came before you, absorb all the advise you can, then make ration educated decisions, and learn from your sucesses and mistakes.

I didn't vote because I don't think the choices are accurate in any way. I think the phrase 'don't believe everything you hear' has some basis in fact. However, you have to temper this remembering that marine aquarism is a hobby and science in evolution.

The foundations that we build our tanks on are based on marine aquarium science that is current at the moment. Managing it afterwards is an art. Like anything in life, you have to constantly learn to understand. I don't think I would ever take ONE person's opinion for gospel initially. However if 3 writers tell me not to dose my tank, I would tend to believe it's probably wise to follow their opinion until such time as I have evidence to prove otherwise.
