just out of curiosoty, how much do very large sailfins get sold for. i paid £15 for mine and hes about 12-13". think its a bargain as my uncle sold his common plec for £60 at about 9".

normally - nothing...

they sell for a few punds when small and then easily out grow most tanks. I very much doubt it as a common your uncle sold - unless he was very lucky - most shops will not give you anything for them as they are unwanted and they end up with lots of big fish no-one will buy.

it was definatly a common as it used to mine as i sold the tank to him. Anyways as im on the topic, i know that commons can withstand cold water temperatures. is this also true with a gibbiveps as i really really love this fish and never want to get rid of him so i was thinking that in the warmer monthes he could be housed in a pond??? btw im in the uk, just to get an idea of the temp.

most shops I've seen struggle to even give them away (at large sizes) :/ (the common or sailfins).

i understand that this plec can grow to be a potential 20" but what is the average? i feel such an **** as the bloke my lfs said it wont grow bigger than 12" and would be fine at this size in a 48" x 16" x 18" tank. true? any way can anyone answer my previouse question please?

This might shed some light - there seems to be a few that fall under "common pleco" and indeed the H. punctatus will only reach 12", however the Liposarcus spp. can reach up to 20 ".

So you'll just have to find out what exactly your common plec is - easier said than done :/

Sailfin plecs are true tropical fish, i wouldn't personally advise a tank/pond colder than 23degrees for a sailfin- in the summer it may be warm during the day but you also have to take into consideration how cold it'll get at night and how much the temp drops too  .
