Plecos Sucking The Polystyrene Background

They are meant to be slate grey but a couple of my plecos are sucking the colour off and they are going white
Is it bad for them... it's certainly bad for the appearance of my tank, looks like the white cliffs of dover
 
I have backgrounds in my tanks but the plecs don't seem to have damaged them in any way, so not sure. They're not going to be toxic but equally I can't imagine they make for a good plec diet either.
 
i have a juwel vision 260 with one fo those juwel black structured backgrounds and my royal plec L190 chews the crap outa it all the blacks gone and its all grey and the shape is changing it looks natural nothing wrong with it! but it bugs the crap outa me wen im sleeping his hairy mouth n chin scratch it all nite hahaha

ahh ha the bigger picture eh... a naturally occurring polyb/g... well they had better crack on and wear it down to that natural state then, sounds quite nice actually! Although I've ordered some xmas moss so thinking of covering it over with some of that
 
yeah it does look kinda natural slightly " greeny" looks good i was gona replace it but im glad i left it because it looks good
