its just about time to add a pleco or cat to my african tank and i was wondering which pleco or cat would be best suited for my tanks conditions ........ sand substrate, rocks and fake plants

I don't know what kind of plecos but synodontis catfish are african and smaller than alot of catfish might want to look into them, that's what i'm intrested in

but doesn't sound like i can get one

As suggested go for one of the synodontis species, prefferably one which in the wild inhabits the same region as your cichlids (lake malawi or tanganykia) as they will be used to dealing with aggresive tankmates and living at high pH and hardness levels. The most commonly seen syno for Tanganykian set ups is Synodontis multipuncatus known as the cuckoo catfish and there are many others available for both lakes if you look around and research carefully.

Plecos which hail from south america are not really suited to life with african cichlids as they preffer soft acidic water and often end up with eyes missing and fins torn as they are not designed for fast retreats from aggressive fish.

As CFC said Plecos are from South America where they live in soft acidic water, in this enviroment they do not live with fish that are a aggressive as the African Cichlids, a Synodontis species which orignate from the same continent is a better idea.

Good Luck
