I've got a small tropical tank. I was considering moving up to a larger tank in the next month or so as i'm getting quite into this tropical fish lark!

I added a diver with a larger air pump as I didn't find the one that came with the tank was sufficient. It is only one of these moby dick tanks. Plus a seperate filtration unit. Both of them were the smallest I could find but I am aware that they were probably still a bit over powered for the tank.

The tank has been up and running for 5 months. Had two casualties in that time. At present I have neons / mollys and some (sorry if I sound thick) long (about 1.5 inch) sea blue looking fish (which aren't very friendly. They hide all the time trying to bury in the sand).

Anyway. In total I have 10 fish. And I had a Pleco which was up to 3inches long. Looked pretty healthy not thin and was always active.

two days ago I noticed he didn't want to cling to the glass and then yesterday he kept floating to the top. It was awful to see.. He was desperately trying to swim back down. I noticed his belly looked a little swollen. No other visual marks so I tried to feed him a frozen pea. But that didn't work.

After reading lots of websites I was hoping he would still be alive today so I could try and help him, but unfortunately he passed away overnight.

Can anyone help me. I need to find out the reason or try and establish a reason as to why he died.

I want to buy a newer larger tank. But its disheartening when this happens. He was so friendly, I could pat him. Its such a shame

Hi

Its 20 litres. 15 ins wide x 12 ins high x 8 ins so yes its not that big at all. That is why I am going to a larger tank. But the fish that are in it are relatively small and it certainly didn't look jam packed.

I am going to take the water readings and post back.

Here are the results:

Dimensions: 51cm L x 38cm W x 30cm H/20" L x 15" W x 12" H
Surface area: 0.19 sq m/2.08 sq ft/300 sq inches
Volume: 59 l./13 gal.
Volume after displacement: 53 l./12 gal.
System type: Tropical freshwater aquarium
Total stocking density: 23"/59cm of fish (built up gradually)
