Pleco colour change

I have 2 clown plecos in the larger of my two tanks - one is about twice the size of the other so I think its a lot older (the smaller one is about 1" and the other is about 2.5-3").

Recently I've noticed that my smaller pleco has changed colour - it was black and gold but now its a pale sandy colour and brown. I have a sand substrate so could it be trying to camoflague itself or something?

They probably are doing a camo thing. My plecs will do that depending if they are on the driftwood, on the lighter colored gravel, or on some black rocks at the one end. Mine will also change color almost instantly when i put in the gravel vac, one can go from almost black to sandy colored with a pebble size pattern.
