Hi all

I have at the mo one 12" common, one 3" golden nugget and one 2 1/2" L264 in my 48" tank. Can I fit anymore plecs in there, really want a zebra. Wont put any others in there but if I find a Zebra I will be hard pushed not to get it. Wont get one if its bad so please say. Other fish in the tank are in my sig.

Jon

(would rather not have the common, rescued from my dads too small tank, but what can I do with it, its a beauty!! so will keep if poss in my tank)

The Common Plec will out grow your tank. IME the larger species like Common and Gibbiceps Plecs become more aggressive as they get larger so your other more delicate Plecs could be at risk. Your Common is also a massive waste producer and with other Plecs in the tank you will need some serious filtration to cope with the current stocking. Zebra Plecs should also be kept in groups of at least three, this group will again add to the waste load and aren't really compatible with the 10"+ Common Plec due to their shy and delicate nature. So while you are still housing the Common Plec I would advise no more. :)

I would suggest trying to swap it at your LFS if they do get zebras in as although they may deny it, loads of people come in asking for bigger plecs to go with there bigger more agresive fish and would probable be sold with in a week in a descent shop!!

our common is in our 4ft at the moment - (and will be rehomed when his time comes)

as Ryan said zebras need to be kept in small groups as they are social fish... ideally in a species tank

I'd say you'd be puching any more plecs in the 4ft to be honest... what sort of filtration do you have?

we have a Fluval 4+ internal and a 304 external on our 4ft.

Thanks for the replies.

The common is five years old and I was hoping it would not grow anymore, though I know than can get to 24". My lfs said they do sometimes take big plecs but dont have the room at the mo.

I use a fluval +4 and an ehiem 2231 at the mo, saving for one of the ehiem pros.

Jon
