Woke up this morning to find my little plec dead!! I am gutted got him over three years ago, he was very shy and didn't come out much but thats what made him so loveable.

Plus he was only little never grew more than about 8 cm length just got a little fatter lol

Lead me to think a few thinks could anyone answer below:

1. Whats the average life span for a Plec

2. What type of plec do you think he was? He was small all black and had bright yellow spots.

Thanks for your help

how much did it cost ? black with bright spots instantly makes me think of an exotic L number plec, but you tend to know when you're buying one of these because you're generally shelling out at least 20 quid, unless you got lucky and it was mislabelled or unknown what it was. did it grow 8cm or was that how big it got eventually ?

unfortunately without a picture its very hard to say what it was, there are lots of dark coloured spotted plecs, though as i say they're generally expensive fish. definitely black not brown ? fin markings ? not sure what lifespans are though.

sounds like a Bristle nose to me. Sorry for your loss.

Iw was about 3cm when got it and biggest it got to was about 6-8cm then stopped growing just got fatter lol

definately black with bright yellow spots

think he was 25 quid aswell

Looked like this one but without the yellow marks on the fins

What size are his spots? It could be a few. L082 are the ones I know that would be similar. There are about 30 different types of Pleco with similar characteristics to what you have described so it may be worth checking out the planetcatfish website if you can't get a good photo.

Most pleco's with that sort of pattern normally get to about 12-15cm though fully grown and the average life span varies but is normally around 10 years or so.

Hope that helps a little.

Sounds like Hypancistrus contradens. They tend to have white spots but some have yellowish spots :good:

No spots are too thick. My mate at LFS thinks it was one of the golden nuggets. They had nothing similar in so I treated myself to a royal plec!
I like the stripes and red eyes, he seems as shy as the other one though

Just looked at some others def looks like I had a snowball placo
