This Plec has been in my 66L tank ever since I got it, so it must have been there for a good few years before-hand as well. It's only a maximum of 3" long and has stayed that size ever since I first saw it. Would like to get it ID'd before I buy any new fish as the Plec would have to live with them. Oh, and any discolouration on the Plec (ie the red marks) are just reflection on the glass.

its a common plec not too sure on the species but its abit like a gibbycepps with the markings they do grow large i have 3 1@13" 1@ 12" 1@6" and still growing

I thought it was, kinda hoping it wasn't...I have no idea what to do with it now. I don't really want to get rid of it but I don't have a larger tank to keep it in.

you could probably keep it for a short while but best to rehome it really do you know anyone with a big tank? if so give it to them they will get a new fish and you can still see it evryone's a winner

Unfortunatly the only person I know with a large enough tank is my dad, and he's living in Texas. I know of no one near me with a tank, let alone a big one. I don't really want to euthanize it as it's keeping the bacteria in my filter media alive seeing as I have no other fish in there just now.

there is no need to euthanize just give it to a lfs or sell it or advertise it free to good home or something its a healthy fish so euthanizing it would be morally wrong in my oppinian

It's wrong to me too, but if I had no other choice then what else could I do? I normally would never euthanize a fish. I'll wait until I buy new fish then sell him.

There really is no reason to euthanise. Just phone around all the fish shops in your area, explain the fish came with the tank and you have since ID'd it and it's going to grow to big.
One of them will take it.
You probably wont get any money for it, but someone will take it for free I can promise you.

Thanks everyone. I know you weren't having a go at me, mixmaster jay. Sorry if my reply sounded like you were.

I'll advertise on here once I get new fish in, don't wanna leave the tank empty and lose my bacteria.

Hmm there are alot of things you could do, as said go to local fish shops....advertise on here, also try those free ad websites like we have one called gumtree and aqauriast classifieds...also there is a site for<google> monster fish keepers which 90% of there people are from north america...bet you would find someone there willing to take it

Perhaps you could advertise it here first? Line up a home for it, and then when you know it's going to a new home you can pop to the shop and get a few more fish.
But then your filter isn't having to cope with the waste from the plec and some new fish for too long. Only a matter of days as opposed to what could possibly be a week/ a few weeks.

OR, you could nip into somewhere like homebase or boots and pick up some household ammonia. And keep the tank cycled that way.
Am I right in thinking the tank was already cycled when you got it?

Have you tested the water since getting the tank?

LOL nelly!

Unfortunatly I have no test kit and the tank probably wasn't cycled when I got it...My dad is sending me over a test kit seeing as I have no money to buy one myself.

I know, I know, slap my wrist for having no test kit...I'm sorry!

Edit:: Would have to be collected as I'm not confident in posting it...Just as a note incase you were going to be looking to buy it mixmaster jay!
