Can you ID my plec, sold as a yellow spot ? He / she loves the bogwood and as in this pic looks rather shy whilst at the front getting to grips with an algae tab, rare that the fins are down but still a little camera shy. Its around 3.5" and quite lively.

That is an L001, Glyptoperichthys joselimaianus :)

They're a relative of the gibby - here's some info on them from Planet Catfish:

http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/speci...?species_id=177

I'm not sure, but I think a few people have seen these reach larger sizes than PC says, and remember the PC size even if it were correct is only standard length (not including the tail).

My sister used to have one of these - they can be quite bossy, but are lovely plecs if you have the space. Congratulations :D

Edited to add: That'll teach me to have a coffee before I read - PC have upped the size on their link, so that's probably very good info now. Previously they had it down as a bit smaller. So expect him to reach about 14" in total length, seeing as that's a standard length they've put. :good:

Cool he cost me a whoppin £4 from my lfs :good: and i just had to have him as he looked so lonely in the tank amongst oscars..

That's a fair price for them - they've become increasingly common in our LFS over these last few months. They're selling medium 4" ones for about £6 in our LFS, and smaller ones only a little bit cheaper. I would say he'll probably have a good temperament to go in with oscars - many plecs aren't suitable but they're 'ard men are L001s

Edit: What am I like? I really need another cuppa, and me glasses. What's he going in with at yours then? He's gorgeous.

A mixture of various community fish ie, cardinals, cory's, clown loach and gourami's i had planned on a snowball, golden nugget or royal but im unsure if they will mix well.. if not i may need to loose him as i really do like the snowball or golden nugget.

I think the trigon may be room enough to house them but we'll see.

plenty of room ;)

just be sure to take into account the different dietary requairments...

just as a pointer... in our 350 we have a 'number' of plecs... you ready for this?

3x L114 (zippy bungle and george)
1x L141 (Gandalf)
1x LDA33 (spot - original hey!)
1xL182 - (un-named)
1xL014 - Scabby
and the common (Mr Catfish)

there are however, a lot of hiding places :)

Wow - and I thought my 6ft was cram packed with plecs, Smithrc  Dont envy you at gravel vac time! What are the dimensions?

Ahh...just looked at your signature about the fishies for sale, makes sense now, sorry. I was just about to give the usual "You'll need a couple more tanks mate" kind of response! *cringe*

In my 6 x 2 x 2ft I have:

1 x 10" gibby (inc tail, will probably be rehoming him soon as he's not happy since moving in with my original plecs, and also nicking the sevs food before they eat it)
1 x 5-6" rusty plec (potentially 8-10" fully grown)
1 x 4" common BN (albino) - moving into hubby's 6ft tank
1 x 4" flash plec (also moving into hubby's tank)
1 x 2-3" gold nugget (anywhere between 7 and 14" fully grown depending on L no)
1 x 2-3" albino common plec
1 x 6" common plec

Plus 3 babies sevs (2"), probably going down to a pair as they've paired off (we think). And that to me is full (bar the two festivum babies who were supposed to arrive the other day). But then I like to plan in advance, once they're all fully grown that tank will be fully stocked, some folks may say overstocked. But we've got one FX5 on it now, and are planning another.

Do you have other fish in with them?

Long term we need more space :) at the moment they are all quite small 4-6" except the common.

We're running nearly 3x filtration on the tank too - gravel vac time time dosnt happen - it gets caught up in the plants and helps them out :)

Do you have other fish in with them?

Umm yes...

It would look silly with nothing else in there. :)

The thing to remember is that the plecs are not adults and wont be for 10-15 years.

In the mean time I would like a tank that looks nice.

Its 350L (about 100 US gal).

Its got a lot of fish. The "rules" have gone out the window...
I used to rely on test kits to tell me how the stocking levels are - If they showed anything out of line - I was pushing the stocking levels for the filtration... we are running the tank at what the manufactures specs show as 3x. and the levels dont shift from 0... that includes nitrates due to the plants.

2 of the L114's are off to a new home shortly, and a 4ft will be in the living room soon to move the shed fish into.

I'll have to get a pic of the 350 and show the setup with the hiding places :)

I wasn't being funny, hope it didn't come across that way - was just wondering how you managed it! Pics would be great.

I really need to set up my tank with more height/wood and things - all I have now are a few hidey holes scattered along the base - I'm scared of adding more in case the big fellas cant move! And with the sevs to - they're going to get quite big so they need room to swim.

Must admit, the stocking rule doesn't always stick in this house either - as long as the waters fine, the fish aren't stressed, and they're not obviously crammed in too tightly, it's more a case of play it by ear.

I think, personally, in my big tank that two commons, a rusty, and a gold nugget will be fine, with a couple of sevs and the festivums (maybe those rainbow fish I wanted too). Others would say it's too much, then again others on plec boards would tell me to stop being soft and get that royal I wanted *lol*

I do have a problem with folks with 2-3ft tanks with 12" commons in them, or smaller ones with no plans to upgrade. Purely because I cant bear to think of fish getting stunted or being sat in their own poo all day. You know, the kinds of folks who say "Oh an adonis will be fine in my 20g tank, it's only a fish" :(

no problem :)

If you saw my full fish list you'd know what I mean :)

the tank looks great - there is no aggression (except from a red fin shark if he takes a dislike to a clown from time to time)

I'll sort out a piccy later:)

Lovely tank - you can tell it's got plecs in it, because you cant see any *lmao*

Or is it just me? I am supposed to wear specs to be fair...

Wish I could get mine looking half as posh. But I made the fatal mistake of opting for fake plants, and black gravel.

Ignore crap pic quality, not worked out this new camera yet.
