Hi all,

I'm looking to get a Plec to go in my 55 gal Mbuna tank. The sailfin currently in there is being moved to my new 125 gal so i'm looking for something up to 8 inches in size, preferrably an algae eater, that will get on with Mbuna and 2 Syno Eupterus (all fully grown).

I'm aware that BN plecs are compatible but i'm looking for other options, L numbers and common names would be great if you can.

Many thanks

F

Well how are you going to be keeping the water? Mbunas require a pH of 8 - 9 and plecs generally come from places with softer water of a lower pH.

However, i have seen people keep plecs in completely different types of water from their natural habitat and they appear to do well enough. I myself keep alot of plecs that originate from tributaries of the amazon in a pH of between 7.8 and 8 and they all do fine.

Most plecs will be fine. Something like Blue or Green Phantoms (L128 & L200) would look great with mbunas, or a group of smaller plecs such as Flash Plecs (L204) would contrast nicely, but only if you have wood in the tank.

A family friend keeps Cichlids and he has a plec in one of his tanks, I'm sure its either a common plec or a sail fin plec.

but he has red devils and cichlids like that, are the mbuna the smaller ones?

Mbuna are African Cichlids. :)

Thanks for the replies guys.

Bunji the Ph is 7.4 so not especially high but of course there is no wood in there so that the Ph won't drop, which does limit things a bit. I'll have a look at the L128 & L200 as they sound interesting.

Thanks again

7.4 should be fine for any plecs, just don't go for any panaques if you don't have wood in the tank.
