Yesterday my black lyre molly gave birth to a few (11) young black lyre fry and now i would like to know what should i start feeding them with. I am planning on giving them some good amount of brine shrimp each week and supplement them with blood worms, flakes and pellets so tell me what should i start with. i gave them crushed flakes but they are not eating it and are not interested in it. Please tell me how many times do you suggest me to do a water change for them?

I am surprised that they arent eating the crushed flakes. I have baby black mollies and they eat the flakes up. I would try the other foods, but still continue to try the flakes maybe they will catch on. Congrats!

With livebearer fry, it's good to do a 10% daily water change. Also, since mollies need a lot of vegetable matter in their diet, you can give the fry crushed up spirulina flakes, as well as boiled, de-shelled, mushed up peas. Live BBS provides a lot of protein, so if you could feed them that at least once a week, that would be wonderful.

Good luck,

this is the thing what i am planning to do

As Fry Forever has said, the main thing you need to be aware of with mollies and their fry is that they really like the green foods much more than many other fish do. That does not mean that they won't accept meaty foods but that the greens are better for them. When I want to feed fry meaty diets, I use microworms, frozen daphnia and fresh or frozen BBS. The microworm culture requires a half hour of attention every 3 or 4 weeks even if you are not feeding it daily to fry. I find that is something that I am willing to do so that I have a thriving culture when I need it. Even very small adult fish like Heterandria formosa or some of the micropoecilia appreciate the microworms as a treat. BTW they are not really worms at all, they are nematodes.

Well if i will feed my fries peas then do you think they will be ready for it? and tell me that crushed flakes and pellets are they considered to be veggies?

I use a spirulina based flake that contains large amounts of algae as the main ingredient of the food. It only has a small portion of spirulina algae because spirulina is rather expensive but it is largely based on green algae forms. I do not try to feed peas because they are plenty big enough for my adults and I would have a hard time crushing them small enough to feed to my fry. The food that fry gets is almost a powder in texture.

you are right about it sir. The peas are not so easy to crush and i am sure that my fishes will not eat it so for the veggie part i am just feeding them flakes and pellets.
