Hello to you all, I'm new to marine and really need your help. From what i can gather my lfs has had my pants down. Money isn't the issue it my fish's health that worries me. To list my story and problems would take me a week, would anyone be prepared to let me call them, tell you what i've done and advise me what i should do now? I can give you my number if you'd rather that than give me yours. i've lost all confidence in my lfs, and don't know where to turn. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Dave.

Ok, you'll have to excuse my lack of punctuation lol, i'm crap at english and prob always will be. My prob started on 23rd dec 2007. I went to my lfs wanting to start a marine tank and walked out £1200 lighter with an aquaone ufo 880 tank and stand, 2 x 150 watt heaters, aquaone aquis 2250 uv filter and salt sand etc, i was advised to fill my tank, add salt to correct level, leave 2 days then go back and buy live rock which i did 7 kilos of. Again advised to leave 2 days then go for my next visit, after that visit i walked away with 2 clown and 1 foxface, i've know got 2 clown, 1 foxface, 1 large lipstick tang and 5 hermit crabs (v large). Today after testing the water i'm really concerned, ph ok at 8.4 salinity ok at 1.024, nitrate 0.25 or less but nitrite around 0.8, i bought 10 gallon of salt ready marine water from another shop and did, say a 12 % water change, nitrite now 0.6. I know this isn't good so what next?

Your LFS really has given you some bad advise and used you to clear their stock (well some of it) over the xmas period. You really should have done some reading up on marine before just heading out and getting a tank and livestock etc.

Well as for now you need to get the nitrites down which as mentioned earlier should be helped by doing several partial water changes. Also really reduce your feeding so you do not add to higher nitrates! I would suggest constantly checking your params and keeping and eye on yur livestock. How are they looking anyway? Do any of them look stressed or are they swimming around normally wothout any rapid gill movements?

Hopefully you will get through this with minimal losses, but IMO dont ever trust or give business to that lfs again!

Water changes can slow the cycle, though it would be best to continue to reduce damage done. Hermits can take fairly high levels of nitrite for a few days (<2 ppm) but it will do damage above that point. Similarly, I've had fish survive in levels of about 1 ppm, but it will do lasting damage if the period is extended, especially to the gills.

in addition to water changes yu may want to get some of this stuff http://www.aquaessentials.co.uk/index.php?...products_id=103 its not an instant cure but it will help reduce nitrate and nitrite slowly, ultimately you will need to continue with water changesd as I am led to belive its the best way to reuduce levels, and reduce feeding to avoid upping nitrates.

yeah Seachem Purigen is unreal, works a treat! :good:
