I introduced 15 small Neon's into my tank last Friday and today I am down to 5 of them. I have just come home and one of my Angel fish is dead, a clown loach has died within the space of 10 minutes and all the other fish (3 Angels, 2 Rams, the 5 remaining Neons and a clown plec are all very washed out looking). The tank is mature and has been for almost a year with not one problem since setup.

I'm pretty sure the Angels were harrasing the Neons (see my other thread) and I have introduced some disease to my tank from the water that ther Neons came in. I got the Neons from Petsmart (yes I know, but I have got to know the manager pretty well over the last few months and his setup is pretty good so I thought I would give the place a go). Unitl now I have only ever purchased livestock from Maidenhead Aquatics and have never had a problem before. I think I may be speaking to the manager first thing tomorrow.

Does anyone have any clue as to what might be wrong? I have tested the water and the parameters are all normal. My tank is a Fluval Duo 800 with external filtration via a Fluval 204 with spray-bar.

The dead fish have no immediate signs of illness and are currently in the bin wrapped in paper towel. Should I keep them and show to my nearest Maidenhead Aquatics or just take a water sample and see if they can figure out whats gone wrong??? Any comments would be greatly received.

I would think this is definitely a problem caused by these newly introduced neons. To lose a clown loach and angel over this would be distressing for you. I would suggest keeping 1 fish.....and taking it back, explaining what has happened, get compensation...........and never buying fish from pets at home again.HTH........and that you get some kind of reward from your obvious distress(use this when you go back to the store!!)

The sudden death of many fish indicates poisioning of the water, do a 75% change NOW! to hopfully prevent any more deaths.

I did a 25% change and after 5 mins placed some food in the tank and they all started eating which is a good thing right? I have switched the lights off to avoid any further distress too.

As for keeping one of the fish, how? Should I freeze it, keep it in a net in the tank with the other fish or what??? Surely it will begin to decompose and would be useless to the fish shop by the time I take it to the them tomorow morning?

Sorry for sounding a bit blunt but this has freaked me out quite a bit. I havent had a fish die on me in over 3 years until this week!!!

I would keep 1 fish in the fridge in a suitable container and give it back to them.
As Wolf already suggested.....take good care of your water now.......I never add shop water to my tanks after buying fish.

Right, I've bagged the Angel and the Clown Loach and are now in the fridge. I'm going to take some of the tank water with me too and see what they say. I will speak to the manager at Pets at Home and see what he says and if I dont get anywhere I will take them to Maidenhead Aquatics and I'm sure they'd be able to tell me whats going on.

Thanks for the quick responses chali and The-Wolf.

No offence but.......

Are you INSANE?
You have a Maidenhead Aquatics and you bought fish from Petsmart??????

Out of interest, which Petsmart?

And correct me if im wrong but i thought neons were the angel fishes main food source in the wild ?

Until I speak with the Manager of the Pets at Home store where I bought the Neon's from I dont want to name and shame just yet.

Errr, as for Neon's being the Angel's staple diet in the wild, I've only just found this out myself.

I feel like such an amateur. Normally I would read-up on the fish I'm after and make sure they're compatible with my set-up. This was very much an impulse buy and look whats happened!!!

If I dont get anywhere with Pets at Home I will take the dead fish and sample of water to Maidenhead Aqautics and see what they can make of it. I just dont understand what has happened. I'm totally gutted about losing my Angel and even more so my Clown Loach.

I did a visual check of the tank this morning and all the fish were present and correct. The Angels had a bit of colour back in them but were still at the back of the tank hiding. The remaining Clown Loach are very nervous and jumpy looking and appear very washed-out. I just hope I don't go home tonight to another scene of death.
