I saw for the first time this morning that 2 of my sunburst platys are red around the gill area, bright red. I had a Nitrite spike this past week, levels jumped up to 10 from 0, so I have been dosing with Seachem Prime to try to stabilize the tank. This morning is the first time I noticed the reddening of the gills and it is only on 2 of my sunburst platys, not the others. One of the red gilled platys is pregnant so I would really like to save her if possible. Please help, new to fish keeping, so all advice is welcome and appreciated.

I cut down the feeding to once every other day when I saw the Nitrite spike (although they still have healthy appetites and seem hungry), but there is no unusual swimming issues, no fish has secluded itself from the community, and they all are acting as normal as they all have.

My tank is only 6 weeks old, figured the cycle was done when I got 0's on my levels 3 weeks ago and added fish.

Tank size: 10 gal (US)
pH: 6.2 (as of last night), usually 6.8 - 7.0
ammonia: 0.0
nitrite: 3 (as of last night), spike to 10 as late as this past Thursday, usually 0.0
nitrate: 20
kH: 40
gH: 7.5
tank temp: 78F

Volume and Frequency of water changes: Just did a 25% H20 change this past Thursday morning; standard 25% once/week

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: right now only Seachem Prime daily (for Nitrite spike) and once a week API Stress Zyme+, added a plant food yesterday API Leaf Zone (includes Iron and Potassium)

Tank inhabitants: 4 Sunburst Platys, 4 Red Wag Platys, 5 Tiger Barbs

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): just added live plants late last week, 6/16/2011, Amazon Swords, Wisteria, Mondo Grass, Anubius (and plan on adding Java Moss this week for the fry to come)

Exposure to chemicals: None

Again thanks for any help and advice

Hi there. Your platy doesn't look too bad to me, but it's possible the gills are red because of irritation from the high nitrite.

There's not much you can do except more water changes, and I'd recommend water changes rather than relying on any additives.
