Hi all,

I had just finished conditioning my male and female betta and after letting Mr Bubbles build a nest I added them after them seeing each other for 2 days. I never thought anything of it being usual after I read about them normally just pecking at each other during spawning.

Anyway I thought I would check on them just before bed time, and saw that Mr Bubbles was really hurt I mean lying on the top trying to breathe.

There is two other things that I found unual too, I had the female in with another female in a different tank. To My amazement she attacks the other female, which constantley hides by the filter. Then I found a buble nest from her near the side of the filter in the tank that she is kept in.

This makes me think that she may not be a female, so I have taken a picture to show you for your opinion. Adding to that she flares up which I have never seen a female betta do!

She even destroyed the nest Mr Bubbles made.

I have placed her in a seperate tank from the other female and Mr Bubbles.

I look forward to your opinions and thoughts

I can't tell from that picture, but does she have a white spot on her belly? That is the best way to tell if you have a female.

I can't tell gender from the photo. Too blurry.

You may have a Plakat male, but some females are just extremely aggressive and violent, and even blow bubblenests. It's rare, though, for them to be that bad, so I think you may have yourself a Plakat male.

I also Believe that to be a Male PK, Please post another pic for Confirmation.

Im doing some tank water changes tomorrow, so will try and get one then.
Mr Bubbles is really ill, not even eating. Im Devoed, bless him.

Hey Peeps,

Well the male plakat was dead this morning, he didnt have a name.

Mr Bubbles is still hanging on, poor bugger is suffering, I have thought about culling him, I carnt do it.

Im hoping he will pull through, ive had him for 3 mths now.

Hes not even eating, will keep you all updated.

Dead? What? That wasn't even the beat up one. NEVERMIND. TOO ANGRY FOR WORDS :grr: :< :rip: :byebye: There is one more I'd like to say, but may be going too far. So, I'll just say it was one with a sign. Some people shouldn't have pets.

That's rather harsh, manyfish4me. I know of experienced breeders with 50+ spawns under their belt who occasionally lose one during a spawn. Two guys in my club bought a fertile black female once, for an outrageous price and they attempted to spawn her half a dozen times and she killed every single male. I was told on the last attempt that they sat there watching and watching for hours (because their males were worth $$$), they got up to run and get something to eat, came back and the male was dead within that twenty minute time frame.

Mells, females DO flare, they DO destroy nests etc, but I agree that it may have been a male plakat. They're becoming more common in lfs's lately, or wherever you got him/her. Sorry you had such a bad experience, try again.

It looks to me like in her post, she is calling letting the 2 fish see eachother for 2 days "Conditioning". If that is correct, I don't think my comment was harsh. The poster isn't even sure that they were not the same sex.

I am very dissapointed in the number of people here latey that are posting topic along the lines of: I just got came home with, betta's from the petstore, and put them in a bowl. I'm gonna sell the babies. THESE ARE LIVING THINGS. It seems that some of these poor fish, may have actually been better off being left at the petstore.

Is anyone doing any research, or listening to any advise anymore?

Ok, I could be wrong but I read it totally differently than you obviously did. It was just an error in sexing, it's nothing to stone someone over.

Right- for a start I did condition my Bettas for over two weeks, I had a set up in which they could see each other 2 days prior to the spawning attempt.

I am very dissapointed in some people on this forum, and I do think you were harsh. I have had my bettas for over two mths, oh and thanks for critising my petkeeping skills, be gratefull you are not one of mine! :grr:

Some of you peeps dont obviously understand the concept of fishkeeping, can you honestly say that you have never lost one of your fish???!

I have got severel female bettas who havent displayed this temperment during spawning which is why I questioned it not being a female. And for a start im still not a 100% that it wasnt a female, I have only gone from what you peeps have advised and that was iffy because of the picture quality.

Oh and just to mention that I did plenty of research reg fish, I just wanted soem advice NOT CRITISM.

The Lfs I had them delivered from, stated that they were female bettas, I had never came across Plakat Males before hence me not knowing.

So Manyfish4me, unless you have got an apology you should keep a lid on your harsh comments until you know the facts! :grr:

OMG i can not believe i just read that.    You must have not been doing enough research cause you would have known that with females under 4 in a tank will kill each other. I wouldn't even put 2 of my mellowist fb's together! I think also if you did the research you would be able to tell the difference from a female betta to a male PK. Its very obviose! The egg spot is very easy to see. I can not believe that you are not getting as much negative response as you really disserve. Also if you really thought she was a female betta why would you try to breed her? She obviosely from the photo is not plump with eggs. So even if you thought it was a female betta and really was a male pk you would have tryed to breed her when she was ready to breed. I doubt that you bought it as a "female betta" if it was a male pk. I've always thought that PK's were considerably more expensive than female bettas. And the lfs u bought it from would lose income.
