Lovely looking fish, a tetra, but I haven't managed to find one like it.

Can you go to the store and see if they have more of them and what they're listed as?

cherry barb %100 sure
thanks for the id. wow, a cherry barb. i hope that he won't be as aggressive/fin nipping as my albino barbs are & that he doesn't get as large! 1 of my albinos has eaten so much and gotten so big in the short time i've had him that i may have to give him back to the lfs.

also, i noticed in your sig that you have a pictus with your neons. has he ever sucked up your neons? i had a pictus before who sucked up 4 of my neons and 3 of my glow lites! i was sooo upset -- i ended up giving the pictus back to my lfs.

i dont know why everyone makes a big deal of pictus's
i have had mine for 2 years singly and is perfect with other fish
doesnt eat a fish that i have seen or know of
my neons are fine around the pictus, now they do need companionship
of their own species (which i didnt know when i got her/him)
but i cant fit anymore in my tank,
now the eating other fish thing, well might be a personal thing with the fish
i have seen nasty pictus's but mine is very docile...

Give it time. It's not always obvious but when a fish needs to be in a group, you should do that if you care at all about the welfare of the fish.

are you speeking to me, teelie? or to someone else?

Yep that's a female cherry barb-looks just like mine. They don't nip like other barbs and they don't school like other barbs. If you want to get one more it'll be fine, i'm sure, or just have the one. I like to always have at least 2 of each non-schooling species.

>>> don't nip like other barbs

Most barbs are perfectly peaceful. Unfortunately, the commonest available, Tiger Barbs are aggressive. People tend to assume all barbs are. I have kept over 100 species of barbs, and could count on the fingers of one hand those which were at all aggressive.

Cherry barbs are a non shoaling species best kept as a pair, or trio, 1 male, 2 females. 2 males together may fight amongst themselves.

Pictus catfish have large mouths and are fish eating predators. It is what they do. They are not aggressive, but will eventually eat small fish that they can swallow.
