Following the advice of "abstract" in the candy gobie thread i'm posting a pic of my unidentifed loach.I would hate to think i wasn't looking after it properly by giving it the wrong conditions but it does seem to be doing ok.It eats algae, off plants and glass, along with small bloodworms and plec tablets.
It was sold as a butterfly sand loach and it does sift about in the sand as well.It is a day active good swimmer and does glide through the water using it's outstretched large pectoral fins.Any ideas?

Sorry can't help, but you might be better off posting this in the "Cyprinids, Characins and Atherinids" section as "loach people" are less likely to look at Oddballs.

i'm glad you decided to do this, if not for anything else but curiosity! it kind of looks like the burmese border sand loach that i linked to before, but it is tough to tell from that angle...is is possible to get a side shot too?

do you think it looks anything like these pictures?
burmese border sand loach

Nemacheilus masyae - checkerboard sand loach
Schistura kohchangensis - ornate tiger sand loach
Schistura mahnerti - burmese sand loach
Cobitis koreenis pumilis - sand korean loach

To be honest, you need to post a bigger picture :p and one where you can see the fish clearly. Can you get a picture of it from the side when it's on the substrate?

I just guessed the fish I mentoned above but look them up anyway. They all have a reddish color like the fish in your pic and they have stripes (which that fish appears to have also) and they all have a common name reffering to 'sand' :p.

I personaly think it'll be one of the schistura species if anything.

Hey Stevie,

I might have the same Thingy,

Do they Change Color to an Off White color very very quickly

Nope,i've not seen mine change colour. There is another one where i got this one from though they still don't know exactly what they are.Should i buy it or are loaches like this best kept alone? Here's another pic from the side.

well, most loaches, have a fairly calmn/non agressive temperment, so chances are it will be fine....my main concern with it is 1) it may grow very large which you may not be aware of if you don't know exactly what type it is or 2) it is something OTHER than a loach that needs different type of care (i.e. food, temp, etc)

it's still really tough to tell what it is even with that good picture...i hope someone else can...over time, though, you'll prolly notice it change color/shape/form, whatever, and it will more closely resemble one of the above-mentioned loaches...but for now, i am stumped :dunno:

Considering the points raised i won't get the other one as we only have a small tank.
Thanks for the links but nothing seems to look like it.I've also been to the library checking out reference books but no luck so far.
I'm thinking perhaps this loach isn't really imported for sale and that's why i can't find no info. This one was picked out of a tankfull of red-tailed botias which were the actual fish being sold. The shop assistants never knew it was in there with it's little pal until i pointed it out.

It looks to me like it could be a 'lizardfish' which is a type of Hillstream loach. I think the latin name is Homaloptera. Hope this helps
