PLay sand?!?!?!?

OKay i am goin to change my gravel to sand and am leaving in like 2 seconds but i need to know what kind of sand to get, will play sand work ,and where should i get some?

I use play sand, works great! Looks natural, isn't too fine, and the fish love it. Find it at garden centers, hardware stores, maybe even stores like WalMart ext.

Why? Play sand still does the job and is very easy to get hold of.

I use play sand and the one I have at least is nice and heavy so it's easier to hoover off and settles very quickly.

CheeseSpecialist, have you ever had problems with dead spots in the sand in your tanks? And do you find plants can grow in it? I'm thinking of using play sand from argos next time I set up a tank...

Well, if you look at the links in my sig, you will see that I have 2 very planted tank with sand. I find the plants grow fine in it.

I am not sure about dead spots because I mess it up every now and again and most tanks have burying fish.

I got my sand from Argos by the way. Brilliant stuff

Yeah I've looked at your tanks before, I really like them. I figured if you'd taken the photos soon after planting, there might have been subsequent plant problems that weren't present earlier. I dunno if I explained that rihgt but it makes sense in my head.

I think I'll be making a trip to argos soon on account of it only being £2.50 a bag.

play sand works fine, atleast once a month i poke my fingers through all the sand to help keep dead spots away

i tried to get pool sand once, but i called a few places, and nobody carries the stuff i needed... they said they changed to something else, cant remember exactly. if you do go get pool sand, dont mention it's for an aquarium, say you have a pool. one of the places said they werent allowed selling it if it wasnt to be used for a pool.... i guess people were using it to filter their drinking water or something, again i cant remember exactly, it was a while ago!

Pool Filter Sand is sand meant to be submerged in water and it's got a heavier weight. Play Sand is often much lighter, harder to clean and will cloud easily. More people have problems with play sand than pool filter in my experience.

Sorry to hijack but has anyone got any idea how much sand would be needed to do a 30g?

Depending on how deep you want it, anywhere from 15-30 pounds. I have about 20 in my 30 gallon Cory tank and it's about 1.5 inches deep.

Rough estimates on the weight and depth. Sand being sand, it's not easy to measure.
