Hi all,

After seeing hundreds of photos of beautiful tanks with "play sand" as the substrate, I just thought I'd show you what we get here as play sand. Not the beautiful ivory stuff of legends, to be sure:

Flippin' heck; you must have tough kiddies over there!

Sieve? (One of those big round ones that gardners use for potting compost)

although not as aesthically pleasing as the whiter stuff, I do think that looks much more natural and reflective of a riverbed :good:

I switched to the white stuff recently and I'm currently in the process of manufacturing tiny sunglasses for my tetra.

Oh the cories dont like that. im sure about it. the rocks pocking at their delicate stomachs. already mentioned but try ordering some of websites

try syphoning it so that the rocks stay out and the inner smooth sand goes through.

they will be fine on that. Lots of people keep them on much larger gravel and have no issues whatsoever.

it was more  at the idea of that passing for playsand than it being bad for the cories. Although I'm not sure how much better it would be than the old sand you had TOS? Have you done the finger rub test on it like you did on the other? I did the finger rub on a bag of builder's sad I found in the back of my garage and it was really soft so I'm going to be using it in my biotope (although in fairness, my biotope won't have cories in it...)

This is AFTER I ran it through the sieve!

This is actually "softer" than the white stuff I had. The cories seem to prefer it a lot.

We're still planning a trip to Lake Superior, where we're going to look for good rocks, driftwood, and maybe some of the sand that rolls out of the lake with big waves. It's almost round pellets, and it's a dark brick red. I'd like to fill up a 5g bucket and bring some home, put it into an empty tank, run the filter for a while and then see what kind of test results I get for hardness and the like. Should be interesting.

But, any time someone would like to export some of your nice play sand to the States, I'll buy!
