Hi

I went to feed my fish this morning and discovered that my blue mickey mouse platy's side fin is partly missing!!!! :( will she be ok? or will i have to move her to isolation tank for treatment?

At first she wasn't using the fin but i looked a few hours ago and she seems to be using it, but she has lighten in colour could she be suffering from shock?

I'm baffled as to how she substained this injury

Try some melafix to heal up the fin, its natural and won't harm your other fish and will prevent her fin getting infected, it should grow back and she'll do fine. How long have you had here? Do you have any rough or sharp objects in your tank??

You can use melafix, but I prefer to leave nature to take its course. It will take a bit longer, but will save you dosing up the tank with chemicals, and the results are just the same

It may be wise to watch the fish for a while and see if you can find out who the culprit is. You could also think about adding more foliage or an ornament that will provise somewhere for the platy to hide if it feels threatened.

Can you tell us what fish you have in the tank. Zebra danios can often fin nip, this happened to my platy but it is almost totally back to normal and colour has returned. A list of what you have might help to make the possible culprits known

I checked her again today she looks ok and she still eating her usual amount of flake, i also found who the culprit was a female guppy and i noticed her pecking at her and chasing her around the tank. But they have stopped now for time being, but it has made her abit timid from the rest.

In my tank i got a bamboo log she can take cover in and i have planted the aquarium quite thickly with more plants.

I haven't used any treatments as yet as the fin looks ok (no white edging) and healing up on it's own but i do have Melafix on standby should i need it.
