Hi,

yesterday afternoon I bought a platydoras costatus (Humbug Catfish, Striped Raphael)
but as its nocturnal, and new, it found itself a home in the tank.

It has dug a cove under a piece of bogwood, and I have only been able to see the back of its flank.
Until about 30mins ago, I know fish can't see the red spectrum, and I have bought some red LEDs to make a 'night time viewing system' :) but thats another story. anyway, I made a 'make-shift' red light to examine to fish when it came out. (from a red sweet rapped stuck to the front of a small torch :*) :D )

I notice that it has sores on its right and left flanks, just below its dorsal. I don't think anything in the tank has attacked it, its is in a tank with a synodnotis ocellifer, and a VERY small bichir. the sores look like they could have been caused form the abrasion between the bogwood and itself?

I have Interpet Anti-internal Bacterial solution (9) which says it can be used on ulcers, I can't add any due to the tank being treated for whitespot, which I didn't notice until after purchasing the new fish :-( .
Should I be concerned and add something for it? or shoudl it be ok?

I think I will move the bogwood, so that there is NO sand under it, so the fish can't dig, there are plently of hiding places in the tank, I have a fake log, a fake slate tunnel, and two large pieces of bogwood, one piece is long and flat and it balanced over the tunnel and some rocks to provide another 'cave'.

any ideas or help?

[off topic] I'm off to dig out a few red LED's and test the red light thing... I know they seem to be able to see infra red though... [/off topic]

I read an article in PFK about it, I have all the stuff, just aint put it together yet :D

anyway, anyone got any answers for me?

bad news... our plecs legged it when i pointed it a them - they can see red fine :(
Infrared (night vision) is a lot less obvious to them though - I've got some cool film of them at night with the night vision mode on our camcorder.

we actually lost one of these when it got stuck in a cave - yours bay have got stuck somewhere and hurt itself getting out. take a look at the bogwood for holes... and try to bloc them up.

Mine didn't move with the make-shift red, any I have thought about the night vision on my camcorda, but I've never been bothered to do it, as I don't have a capture card :( and I can't afford a digital camcorda.

the bog wodd it made a whole under had a large spike coming from it, which made room under the wood, if you understand what I mean, so I cut it off so the peice lies flat. :)

hopefully (s)he'll be ok, I'll just have to watch and make sure it doesn't get infected.
